Guide for People Planning to Study Abroad

Many students wish to pursue their education abroad, but they don't know where to begin. This is a step-by-step guide that would help you plan your move overseas for education.

Course: First of all decide your course. While deciding your course you need to consider the following things:

  • Do you want to pursue a diploma or a degree?
  • What shall be the length of the programme?
  • Do you want to enrol in a full-time or a part-time course?

Location: Once you have fixed the above factors, choose a place where you would like to go to pursue the course. If you have certain places in your mind, find out the colleges or universities of those areas that offer your chosen course. If not, make a list of the best universities/ colleges that provide the course.

Prospects after the course: Make sure that you are also ready to take on the world after you graduate. If you wish to work after studies, check if the institute organises campus recruitment drives. Many institutes also offer programmes that allow you to intern at some companies during your course. This is a wonderful opportunity as it increases your chances of getting employed. In case you want to study further, look for all the options offered by the institutions of your choice.

Eligibility: Each course has its own eligibility criteria, which is clearly provided at the website of the institution. You must ensure that you meet the requirements of age, qualification, work experience, grades, academic test results and language proficiency scores.

Fee: Check the fee structure to plan your finances. Such details are given on the website or can be asked via email.

Tests: Once you have chosen the course Like PTE Online or Ielts Online and institute, take the tests.

Application: Refer the calendar of the institution to know when the programme of your choice begins. Also check the application submission deadline. A few places select applications on a first-come-first-serve basis, so make sure that you submit the application at the earliest in order to increase your chances for selection. While filling the application, you would be asked to upload several documents, such as Detail Marks Cards (DMCs), transcripts, résumé, statement of purpose and score cards of tests that you have taken and pay a non-refundable application fee. Make sure that these are ready before you start filling the application.

You should also consider applying to more than one institution to ensure your application gets accepted by at least one place to save your time, else you will have to wait for another 6 months or an year to reapply.

Application result: It may take about 3 - 4 months for the decision to come, depending on the institute. Once you get admission offer, you would be required to submit a non-refundable fee of $100 - $200, to confirm your seat. After this, you would have to pay the course fee.

Visa: Start preparing your visa application by collating documents such as résumé, statement of purpose, work experience and other financial documents or documents related to family details. Apply well in time as it may take up to 8 weeks for the decision regarding visa application to come.

Once you are guaranteed visa, book your flight as the rates hike when it is about time. Next, arrange your accommodation. Many institutes offer accommodation within the campus.

Once all is set, make a list of things that you would need to carry and buy the things that are missing.
